Dates: (1928-present)

Why she rocks: She is an author and poet, known as “America’s most visible black female autobiographer”. She’s been nominated for several awards, including a National Book Award for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and a Pulitzer Prize for her volume of poetry, “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Diiie”. She was very active in the civil rights movement in the 1950’s, and served as northern coordinator for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She was one of the first African American women able to publicly discuss her personal life and struggles.

Quote: “Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.”

Because of this woman… African-American women finally feel free to let their voices be heard, through speech and writing.
